Learning & Behavior Specialist II
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Auditory/Oral Specialist
Dr. Maribeth Lartz and some Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher Candidates performed a research project to learn from deaf and hard of hearing ISU students how technology is used in their classes and what improvements could be made to help them in the communication process.
Video script: I think portable devices can help a lot too, because you can bring it with you anywhere, and anywhere you can communicate with someone, if you have communication barriers. And, if I want to meet someone with them, I don't have paper, I don't have a pen, I can just get my sidekick out and open it and, hey, want to talk to me, ask questions or whatever.

Specialists in Deaf and Hard of Hearing teach students in pre-school through age 21 in public schools and other specialized programs. Students in this specialty take courses in language, literacy, speech pathology, audiology, and sign language.
The program at Illinois State University is one of only three programs in Illinois to offer this specialty and our program is different because we have children who are deaf or hard of hearing on campus in our University Laboratory Schools.
This program is known for its quality as well as its individual attention. Deaf and Hard of Hearing students get to know one another well and take many of the same classes together. If you are the type of person who likes to get involved, this program has exciting volunteer opportunities available with deaf and hard of hearing children and the Deaf Redbirds.

Professional Development Partnerships provide hands-on learning experiences for teacher candidates. All three undergraduate programs within the Special Education Department work with partnership schools to provide high-quality field experiences and student teaching. Participation with one of the partner schools is dependent on the teacher candidate's individual program.
